Rep. Doug LaMalfa, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 1st district since 2013, voiced strong criticism on social media regarding recent redistricting efforts in California. In a series of posts dated August 15, 2025, LaMalfa questioned the legitimacy and fairness of proposed congressional maps.

On August 15, LaMalfa wrote, “The people of California voted twice to take the power of redistricting away from legislators. This is a blatant power grab by those who want to draw new lines so they can run for Congress. It’s corrupt. California’s constitution forbids the state from mid-decade redistricting,” referencing the state’s legal framework that restricts redrawing district boundaries outside regular cycles.

Later that day, he posted another message: “This is an absolutely ridiculous gerrymander! Anyone who knows anything about California should be outraged.”

In a third post on August 15, LaMalfa added: “If you want to know what’s wrong with these maps – just take a look at them.  How on earth does Modoc County on the Nevada and Oregon Border have any common interest with Marin County and the Golden Gate Bridge?    Voters took this power from Sacramento for just this reason.”

Doug LaMalfa has represented California’s 1st District in Congress since 2013 after previously serving in both the State Assembly and Senate. He was born in Oroville, California in 1960 and continues to reside there. LaMalfa holds a Bachelor of Science degree from California Polytechnic State University.

California voters approved measures in previous years to transfer redistricting authority from legislators to an independent commission, aiming to prevent partisan influence over electoral boundaries.
