Colusa County Behavioral Health is conducting a series of Narcan giveaway events across the county throughout October. The initiative aims to enhance public health and safety by providing residents with Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, which is essential in reversing opioid overdoses.

The presence of fentanyl in illicit drugs has led to numerous unintentional poisonings and fatalities. Narcan, when administered correctly, can reverse these effects and potentially save lives. These events are being held at the seven branches of the Colusa County library system, encouraging residents to include this life-saving medication in their emergency medical kits.

"Narcan is safe for all age groups, from infants to the elderly, and should be widely available in every community," stated Tony Hobson, Ph.D., Director of Colusa County Behavioral Health. "These giveaway events make it easier for families and individuals to add Narcan to their first-aid kits, increasing the chances that lives can be saved in the event of a poisoning or overdose."

Narcan is an over-the-counter nasal spray that counters opioid overdoses by blocking opiates' effects on the brain and restoring breathing. The distribution events are part of Colusa County's broader strategy to tackle the opioid crisis and ensure residents are equipped for emergencies. Attendees will receive free doses of Narcan along with brief training on its proper administration.

The schedule for the 2024 Narcan Giveaway Events includes various locations: Arbuckle Library from 1pm – 3pm; Maxwell Library from 1pm – 3pm; Colusa Library (Main Branch) from 3pm – 5pm; Williams Library from 2pm – 4pm; Stonyford Library from 12:30pm – 2:30pm; Princeton Library from 11am – 1pm; Grimes Library at an unspecified time.

All Colusa County residents are welcome at these events without needing prior registration. Supplies will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Educational materials on overdose prevention will also be available.
