(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) voted in favor of H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. The bill aims to address the immediate national security threat posed by TikTok and establish a framework to ensure other applications under the control of foreign adversaries do not jeopardize national security.
Under this bipartisan bill, if an application, such as TikTok, is determined to be owned by a company controlled by a foreign adversary, like ByteDance in the case of TikTok, the application must be divested from foreign adversary control or face restrictions in the United States.
Congressman LaMalfa emphasized the importance of protecting American users' data, stating, "As long as TikTok remains in the CCP’s control, 170 million American users’ data is at risk of being targeted, manipulated, and abused." He further explained, "This bill will allow TikTok to continue being used in the US as long as it is divested from communist control," highlighting the need to safeguard against censorship and anti-American messages prioritized by TikTok's algorithm.
The Congressman highlighted the necessity of setting guardrails to minimize the potential risks China could pose to national security and emphasized the importance of protecting Americans' data from foreign adversaries.
Congressman Doug LaMalfa represents California’s First Congressional District, including Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, and Yuba Counties.
