Rep. Doug LaMalfa has announced his intention to run for Chairman of the Western Caucus as the 119th Congress approaches. In a letter addressed to members, he outlined his commitment to advancing the priorities of Western and rural communities, opposing federal overreach, and promoting policies beneficial to rural livelihoods.

LaMalfa stated, “The Congressional Western Caucus has always been a strong voice for rural America, fighting for real reforms to the challenges we face in the West and beyond. Today, I’m excited to announce my candidacy for Chairman as we head into the 119th Congress. I believe we have an opportunity to expand our influence, drive real results, and make sure every Member has a seat at the table. I’m ready to lead by working alongside our members to build on the work we’ve done to make our Caucus an even greater force for rural America.”

The Western Caucus represents congressional members from western, rural, and resource-based areas and advocates for American people's priorities. With more than 30 years on Capitol Hill, it is now a significant bipartisan entity comprising nearly 110 members from over 35 states and territories.

Originating in response to concerns about federal interference with traditional values such as agriculture and energy in rural America, the caucus has expanded its reach across the country. It aims at educating its members about rural life while advocating through its Eligible Congressional Member Organization status.

Doug LaMalfa is a farmer representing California’s First Congressional District which includes several counties such as Butte and Shasta.
