Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) has opened the opportunity for students from California’s 1st Congressional District to apply for military service academy nominations through his Congressional office. The nominations are for those who aspire to pursue military service and attend America's prestigious military service academies.

In a statement, Congressman LaMalfa emphasized the significance of attending a Service Academy, stating, “Attending one of our nation's Service Academies is a rare opportunity to earn an excellent education while being prepared to be great leaders in serving our country. I encourage any high school student who is interested in any of the military academies to learn how the academies can help prepare young Americans for their military future and apply.”

The nomination process allows members of Congress to nominate candidates for appointment to the five U.S. service academies, including the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

While receiving a nomination from a Congressional office is the initial step towards attending a service academy, it does not guarantee admission. Successful nominees must also secure an appointment from the respective service academy. The Academies offer a fully funded education, along with a monthly stipend, in exchange for mandatory service upon commissioning. Eligible applicants must be U.S. Citizens, unmarried with no dependents, aged between 17-23, and of good moral character.

Interested students are required to open a pre-candidate file directly with the Academy and complete Congressman LaMalfa’s nomination packet by Thursday, October 31, 2024. For detailed information on the application process and instructions, applicants are advised to visit https://lamalfa.house.gov/services/military-academy-nominations.

Congressman Doug LaMalfa, a dedicated farmer representing California’s First Congressional District, which includes Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, and Yuba Counties, is spearheading this initiative to support and encourage young individuals with aspirations for military service.
