Colusa County is offering residents the opportunity to dispose of old tires at no cost during the upcoming Tire Amnesty Days. The initiative, organized by Colusa County in collaboration with the Rural Counties' Environmental Services Joint Powers Authority, aims to curb illegal tire dumping and encourage responsible disposal practices.
“Improperly discarded tires pose a significant environmental and health hazard. This Tire Amnesty event provides a safe and convenient way for residents to dispose of their old tires responsibly, helping to keep our community clean and healthy,” stated Michael Azevedo, Colusa County Public Works Director.
The events will take place every Saturday in March—specifically on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th—from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Colusa County Road Department located at 5714 E Street in Williams. The program is open exclusively to Colusa County residents who can bring up to nine passenger truck or car tires without rims for disposal.
Proper tire disposal has several benefits including preventing mosquito breeding grounds, reducing fire hazards, and conserving landfill space. It also contributes to community beautification by keeping neighborhoods clean. Additionally, residents can avoid disposal fees while contributing positively to the environment.
For those needing to transport more than nine tires (up to a maximum of 20), arrangements can be made by contacting Colusa County Public Works at (530) 458-0466 for a Transportation Exemption.
This initiative is funded through a grant from the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle). However, due to limited funding, Colusa County may cease accepting tires for free disposal without prior notice.
