Congressman Doug LaMalfa has expressed his disapproval following the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) decision to approve two waivers under the Clean Air Act. These waivers permit California to gradually eliminate gas-powered vehicles in the state.
LaMalfa stated, "The Biden-Harris EPA has just done exactly what they promised they wouldn’t—telling Americans what kind of cars we can drive. By approving California’s plan to ban the sale of new gas and hybrid vehicles by 2035, they’ve pushed an agenda that will only hurt consumers." He further commented on the broader implications, noting, "This policy isn’t just bad for Californians; it will raise costs and limit choices for families across the country."
He criticized the policy as part of a larger political strategy: "It’s yet another example of Democrats forcing their radical agenda on the American people, all while undermining our energy independence and national security." LaMalfa also raised concerns about practical issues with electric vehicles during power outages caused by storms or wildfires, particularly in rural areas like Nevada County where cold weather can deplete batteries rapidly.
The approved waivers provide California with significant authority to implement stringent electric vehicle mandates. The first waiver allows for a transition to zero-emission vehicles for all new car sales within ten years, setting a high standard for environmental regulations nationwide. The second waiver supports a requirement that 35% of new cars and light-duty trucks be zero-emission by 2026, aiming for a substantial reduction in emissions by 2027.
Doug LaMalfa serves as a representative for California's First Congressional District, which includes several counties such as Butte and Shasta.
