On October 9, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the appointment of Brendan M. Farrell as a Judge in the Colusa County Superior Court. This appointment is part of a broader announcement where 18 Superior Court Judges were appointed across California. The California Superior Courts handle civil and criminal cases, along with family, probate, and juvenile matters.
Brendan M. Farrell expressed his enthusiasm for his new role: “I am honored and excited to serve Colusa County in my new capacity as judge and am grateful and proud of the work accomplished by my office as District Attorney.”
Farrell has been part of the Colusa County District Attorney’s Office since 2010. He most recently served as the Colusa County District Attorney. Before this position, he was Chief Deputy District Attorney from 2016 to 2022 and worked as a Deputy District Attorney from 2010 to 2016. Prior to his time in Colusa County, Farrell was with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. His educational background includes earning a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School.
Residing in Colusa, Farrell also coaches basketball at Colusa High School and is involved with local organizations such as the Colusa Arts Council and Colusa Rotary. He has been married to Megan Farrell (Mena), who graduated from Colusa High School, for eleven years. They have a six-year-old daughter named Maria and are expecting a son.
The Board of Supervisors is tasked with appointing a successor for Mr. Farrell's former position as District Attorney. The new appointee will serve out the remainder of Farrell’s term through 2028 according to California Elections Code section 1300(d).
