Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued a statement following the House's passage of H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act.
LaMalfa stated, "The right to vote was intended to be reserved exclusively for United States citizens. Allowing non-citizens that right would be nothing short of an affront on the very principles established by the Constitution, devaluing the vote of actual American citizens. Blue states have long been toeing the line on illegal voter registration, and I am pleased to see the House take action in securing our elections at the Federal level."
H.R. 8281 mandates proof of citizenship for voter registration in Federal elections, requires removal from State databases of voters found not to be U.S. citizens, and expands private rights of action against election officials who register applicants without proof of citizenship.
Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California’s First Congressional District, which includes Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba Counties.
